7 Crucial Website Metrics You Need To Know For A Profitable Website

It’s a sad fact. Most website owners do not know the crucial website metrics for their website. Instead, they know things that have very little relevance to anything like:

* Unique visitors
* Page views
* Bounce rate

If you went to your bank manager and told them how many unique visitors your website is receiving, to be perfectly honest, they would not care in the slightest. But if you tell them how much a lead is worth to you per month and how many leads you have, then they would sit up and take notice.

Why?

Because it’s a metric that has to do with how much money you’re making.

So if you’re serious about making more money from your website you need to know the key metrics to do that. And here are the 7 key metrics you need to have at your finger tips:

Customer lifetime value – If a customer is worth $30 to you and you increase that figure to $60. Guess what has just happened? You have put a lot of extra money in your bank account with very little extra effort. Because it’s a fact, the hardest thing is to get a 1st time customer. So if you know what your customer lifetime value is and you set about increasing it then your profits will go up and up.

How many new leads you’re getting – You need to know how many new leads you got today, yesterday or any time frame you choose.

Visitor value – It is extremely important that you know how much a unique visitor is worth to you. It’s virtually worthless knowing how many unique visitors your website is getting without knowing this figure. When you know how much your visitor value is then you can go and confidently buy more visitors. That’s a position of tremendous power and the ability to have massive growth quickly in your Internet business.

How many new 1st time customers you’re getting – To run your website like a real business you need to know how many new sales you got today, yesterday or within any time frame you choose.

How Much Is A Lead Worth – Is a lead worth $1 to you a per month, 50 cents per month or…? What if a lead is worth to you $2 per month….do you think you could buy a few leads for less than that? See, knowing these figures can cause your Internet business to take off like nothing else. Knowledge, in this case, is power.

Cost per lead – Let’s say you have a lead per month value of $1, and you’re spending $1.10 to get a new lead on your database. Obviously short term you’ll be losing money, but wait a couple of months and you’ll be making a profit. The ideal would be to break even on the front end and then make money a month down the track. If you can do that then you’ll make a LOT of money. But the key is to know how much a lead is worth to you per month.

Leads into customers – You need to know the percentage of your leads that are being turned into customers and then you need to try to improve that percentage.

Do you know why you need to know these crucial website metrics?

Because you can’t improve what you don’t measure. If you don’t know how many new customers you acquired within the last 7 days within a few second how can you improve?

If you don’t know how many new leads you received in the last 30 days how can you improve? If you don’t know your visitor value how can you confidently buy traffic?

So now you know the key metrics you need to know for your website, but that raises a BIG problem.

It takes a lot of time, along with needing to be the right type of personality to be able to get and track this crucial information. Most website owners who try to do real testing and tracking to get the type of numbers I’m talking about, find it’s hard work and they give up.

I’ve been running online businesses since 2002 and didn’t have this figured out until September 2010 when I started my own solution to this problem. If you want to know how to achieve your personal goals in life, but you feel overwhelmed about knowing where to start, know this: Reaching goals in life can be achieved if you have a plan. A very effective way to develop and succeed in your personal goals is to engage a life coach. A life coach can assist with goal setting. Your coach can keep you on track by breaking each goal down to the nitty-gritty and by enforcing accountability. In the meantime, in order to achieve your personal goals:

Want it - In order to reach personal goals in life, you have to first really and truly, have a desire to attain it. Without the "want", there is very little incentive to achieve your personal goals. Personal life goals have to be something you want before you can set out to realize them.

Name it - Writing down your goals in as specific a manner as possible is very important, because, if you can't name it, you can't do it. Goal setting simply cannot occur without actually writing down goals to attain in a very specific manner. "I want to lose weight" is not a specific goal. However, "I want to lose 50 pounds" is very specific and it makes it easier to follow the next step.

Identify the steps - Once you have a, named and specific, personal goal set your next step is to identify the steps toward achieving your personal goals. Reaching goals in life requires taking very specific steps every day toward your stated goal. Again, this must be specific. "I will eat right" is not specific enough. Instead, state exactly what and how much you will eat each day. State exactly what and how much you will exercise each day. List in writing each step you need to take, in very specific terms.

Commit to it - To achieve goals, even ones that you write down, you have to make a commitment to it. When you write your goals down in black and white, including the steps you plan to take to reach them, you increase your chance for success. Make it a contract to yourself by dating it and signing it. When you sign off on the steps you commit to take to reach your goals know that you are making a promise to yourself to do what is on the contract.

Visualize success - There are plenty of scientific studies out there that prove that simply visualizing doing something right can increase your skill level. This is true for sports, and any type of skill you're trying to develop. Therefore, if you visualize yourself following the steps in your plan to achieve your personal goals, you'll be more likely to be successful. Make daily visualization of success a habit.

Review regularly - Periodically assess your progress and review whether your steps are accurate and realistic measures to take to reach your goals. If you need to adjust your contract, that is perfectly normal and acceptable. Just write the contract again and sign it again when you make adjustments. However, don't let yourself off the hook by making your goals and plans too easy. Set your goals high enough so that you are challenged. In fact, your goal should be set high enough that if you realize an 80 percent success rate, you can consider this achieved.

Be accountable - Find someone to whom you can be accountable and share the contract with them. You can pay a life coach, or you can ask a trusted friend to assist you. You must find someone who is willing to call you out if you're making excuses. Life coaching is an excellent way to get help with achieving life goals if you don't know anyone to help you properly.

Removal of Support for Programs of the Big Business Society 35

This week 35 Chief Executives and Chairman of some the laergest companies in the UK issued a statement in the form of a letter to the Daily Telegraph supporting the British Government's plans to institute widespread cuts in public services and state benefits.

Given that such cuts will hurt their customers and ultimately their shareholders I have to assume that the motivations behind this action are party political rather than business-focussed and can no longer support the businesses of these individuals.

It is hard to see how business can continue to grow and develop when customers have no money to purchase goods and services.

The signatories to the letter are listed below and a number of their businesses, such as Mothercare and Carphone Warehouse run affiliate programs which have been supported by Global Affiliate Programs for many years. I have not yet identified all the brands of these companies; those I have identified will be removed over the next few days and others will be removed as their ownership becomes apparent.

The spending cuts supported by these people have been attacked by senior economists.

David Blanchflower, a former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, said of the letter: "It's a terrible, terrible mistake. The sensible thing to do is to spread [the cuts] over a long time. Clearly you have to deal with the deficit, but there is no economics that says you have to deal with it in a week or a month."

Big business seems to think it can dictate public policy to the rest of us. It has to be told it cannot.

Hello,

I know I haven't blogged in while but things have been really busy and I've been trying to reduce the time I spend working (aren't we all).

However there has been a development I have to share with the affiliate community.

For a long time now Charles Tyrwhitt, the mens clothing store known for their top quality shirts, has been a great program to join on Linkshare. I've supported them for years, listed them on Global Affiliate Programs and even set up a page to show how you can add a Charles Tyrwhitt shopfront to your site.

Charles Tyrwhitt have just de-activated my membership of the program on the grounds that I violated their PPC rules.

The rules state "No affiliate is permitted to bid on Charles Tyrwhitt brand terms, trademarks and misspellings." which is fair enough. If Charles Tyrwhitt are running PPC ads on search engines like Google they do not want to compete with their own affiliates.

The thing is, I don't run PPC campaigns, at all, for any program and having pointed this out to them.

Here's the thing. My Shopfront demo page had made a few sales and Charles Tyrwhitt clearly don't want to pay up even though the amounts are small.

Here's my advice to any serious affiliate - avoid this program, they will rip you off.

Now I should make it clear that Linkshare, who manage the program, are NOT to blame. They are merely acting for their clients. It is Charles Tyrwhitt, while excellent at making shirts who are messing up potential relationships with affiliates.

There are honest programs out there. This is one to avoid.

Site Redesign

I've just started a major redesign of the site at http://www.globalaffiliateprograms.co.uk that looks like it's having a detrimental effect on some of the content pages.

This is being rectifies as a top priority.

The redesign finally moves the site from being a portrait (XP and prior formats) layout to a landscape or widescreen (Vista, Windows 7) layout. So it should resolve better for most users and lead to more completions, once these bugs are worked through.

I wish there was an easier way to do this.

Easter in July ?

I thought Easter was the traditional time for resurrections but this month, in July, we have witnessed the online rebirth of two of the recessions most high profile casualties.

Woolworths, a seemingly permanent fixture on most British High Streets closed last year amongst debts and falling sales, taking Zavvi with them. Zavvi was the rebranded, management buy-out that had previously been Virgin Megastores, the music, DVD and games store.

Zavvi bought most of their stock from a wholesaler owned by Woolworths and so were left without stock in the run-up to Christmas, the usual sales high-point. Unable to fulfill orders or even stock shelves, they closed.

Now both brands are back as online sales points, Zavvi offering their previous lines and Woolworths offering electricals, clothes, toys and what must bed the 21st century equivalent of pick n mix, click n mix.

Aside from the warm feeling that comes from seeing the dead rise the significance of these brands to affilikate marketing is important. Prior to their collapse last year both Woolw0rths and Zavvi ran affiliate programs. Zavvi are back with theirs, now on the www.buy.at network. Woolworths are yet to launch theirs but as the brand is now owned by Shop Direct it can't be long in coming.

How to ride out the Recession

Conventional Wisdom would dictate that during a recession, when people are supposed to be spending less an industry such as Affiliate Marketing, based as it is on commissions from other people's spending, would be hit hard.

The logic would be less spend = less commission = less income.

How wrong can you be.

The recession is of anything a boon to the Affiliate Marketing industry because people are spending their money more carefully and are taking their time looking for the best deals. So it doesn't matter whether you're selling clothes, holidays, computers or anything else the key is still to turn your visitors into customers by doing exactly what the Affiliate Industry does best, pre-selling goods so that customers want to buy.

If people are taking time to look for bargains gthey are more likely to find your affiliate site than if they just went straight to the web site of a major store or manufacturer and that's your chance to pre-sell your goods.

Also as I think I discussed previously forward thinking companies will not be closing down their advertising during the recession as it is only those that retain customers who will survive.

In order to do this the companies are competing for customers like never before. The Christmas sales seemed to run in February and the Easter sales started soon after. Then we had Spring sales and now that summer is here, in terms of BST if not the weather, expect Summer sales especially in the holiday, hotels and travel markets. It seems sales are now the norm and not the exception.

To illustrate my point Marks and Spencer has just launched their 'Back to School' sale. This is the first time this happened to my knowledge before the schools have even broken up for summer.

Crazy? Yes, but let's not waste an opportunity to sell thing even if the price is slightly less and the margins tighter than ever.

The merchants are not just competing for customers. They are also competing for affiliates with a range of bonus payments for hitting sales targets, prize draws for first sales, and holidays all currently on offer.

Now is not a bad time to be an affiliate; it is just an interesting time.

A long time ago, so long in fact that a lot of you were still at school then, I was actively involved in local politics. During that time I took part in a lot of elections at every level. Now I've decided to put the knowledge I picked up online at http://www.howtowinelections.co.uk/ .

We're Now on FaceBook

When I first set up Global Affiliate Programs one of the things I promised myself was that no visitors would ever get spammed by the site. I even put this pledge straight into the Privacy Policy. Sure, I wanted to know how many visitors the site had and where they came from and what pages or entries in the directory they found most useful and I was able to work out most of that from the page impressions and program click stats.

One of the things that this meant was the site lacked any meaningful form of feedback. Oh, I put my email address on the site and I asked people to let me know if they had problems with any of the programs; a few even did that, but still I felt that there was a distinct lack of communication between myself and the affiliates using the site.

Now all that can be solved as I've launched the Global Affiliate Programs FaceBook Group. OK, I'm only a couple of years late with this but I've been a bit busy trying to build an online business and updating a directory with thousands of entries by hand takes some time.

The aim of the Group is to give affiliates a forum where they can discuss their experiences of the programs in the directory, suggest new programs, discuss methods of promotion and just about anything else they want to discuss. Hopefully we can get Program Managers involved as well. I've invited a few already.

So if you're on FaceBook, and let's face it everyone seems to be these days join the group and make it your own. It's brand new, so still small in terms of members and I haven't even posted the first discussion thread yet, but maybe you can do that.

Good News and Bad news

Hi again, it's been a while since I posted on here and I'm sorry about that.

First the Bad News.

I've been running Sleep Easy Loans as a meta-Search Engine for the last 5 years or so. I noticed the other day that some of the shtml and php files had been hacked and some code added. I had this happen before with Global Affiliate Programs and I fixed it by uploading my backup copies so I tried the same thing with Sleep Easy Loans and the search function has been seriously messed up, also the style sheets aren't working. I've tried fixing it with everything I know but no luck. So now I have a search engine that can't search, so that's no use.

The hosting for it is due to be renewed at the end of this month and I don't think I'll bother. Any one want to buy a PR2 loans domain?

Now the Good News.

Firstly, I've added a new section to Global Affiliate Programs. The new section is for programs related to Legal and Tax Forms and Services. The idea came from Allen Freeman of StandardLegal.com.

On the form that program managers use to submit their programs to the Global Affiliate Programs directory is a question which asks which section or sections they think their program belongs in. The thinking is simple; I don't assume to more about somebody else's business than they do. Mostly this bit gets missed out and I have to work out what someone is selling from what they tell me which is not always as easy as it sounds; some program managers suggest one or two of the existing categories but Allen to his credit suggested that I add a new Legal category. I've added in the Tax element and expanded it to include services as well as forms to make the page sustainable and searchable and that's how I got the new section.

The other good news.

The world markets are in crisis; we're all going to be poor; and governments are buying out banks as if they were at a fire sale. Therefore it's a great time to start a Foreign Exchange Trading Business. No, I'm not mad. Listen to this.

Etoro Foreign Exchange Trading provide an easy to use web based platform that enables people to conduct foreign currency exchange from home through their PCs and laptops. They run an affiliate program to draw in business and they've been on Global Affiliate Programs since last year. They contacted me this month to find out how I would like to be paid. That's always a question I like to hear.

It turns out that as well as referring affiliates I had referred a few clients their way and upshot was they owe over $3,000. That's nice as I have a couple of unpaid bills that would be just about covered by that with maybe a little left over. The people I had referred to them had made far more; that $3K was only the affiliate commission.

During our conversation Etoro asked if I had an ideas on how I could promote them further. When I suggested white label sites they told me the already did that. They must have added it after I joined their affiliate program as I'm sure I would have noticed that, but better late tha never I have now added the Etoro Forex Trading White Label Site to Global Affiliate Programs. Ok, you're think, very interesting, good for you, don't gloat you've had a little windfall, what's that to do with me. Well, since Etoro contacted me I've been looking into it in a bit more detail. The first thing is Etoro is not a scam. It works so well you might think it is one but it is not. It works like an online casino; you put money in, you move it between currencies based on their respectives value and trends, which are all available to you on the Etoro screen. If you trade profitably and sensibly you can make money, a lot of money. It's just like with poker - don't stake more than you can afford to lose, keep counting the whole time and don't do it drunk.

With the markets all over the place at the moment there is a lot of movement in the currency markets and it is that movement that gives you the chance to profit. It's all about timing. Go to the white Label site, suign up and use the 'Play' option so that you get some practice before you trade for real if you've never done it before.

Adsense and Interest-Based Advertising

I suppose it's time I got back to work.

The catalyst for this is today's earth-shattering news that Google have just launched what they refer to as 'interest-based advertising'. It sounds like good old profiling to me but what do I know.

As an Adsense user I received an email from Google this morning letting me know that I should update my Privacy Policy to reflect the changes Google have made to Adsense. This is what it said :-

We're writing to let you know about the upcoming launch of interest-based advertising, which will require you to review and make any necessary changes to your site's privacy policies. You'll also see some new options on your Account Settings page.

Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to display ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. "sports enthusiast"). To develop interest categories, we will recognise the types of web pages that users visit throughout the Google content network. As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the "sports enthusiast" interest category. To learn more about your associated account settings, please visit the AdSense Help Centre at http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/topic.py?topic=20310&hl=en_GB.

As a result of this announcement, your privacy policy will now need to reflect the use of interest-based advertising. Please review the information at https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=100557&hl=en_GB to ensure that your site's privacy policies are up-to-date and make any necessary changes by 8 April 2009. Because publisher sites and laws vary across countries, we're unfortunately unable to suggest specific privacy policy language.

OK, so like a lot of you I was familiar with the old concept of Adsense, that being that you put the code for the ads on your page, it read your page, especially the title, description, and content tags as well as the text content and throw up an ad that was meant to be relevant to the page thus increasing the CTR. So far so good. Now Google are saying that the ads they are going to throw up will also be based on other pages that your visitor has been too which have also had Adsense ads on them to build up a profile of the visitor. The link above includes this explanation :-

The DoubleClick DART cookie is used by Google in the ads served on publisher websites displaying AdSense for content ads. When users visit an AdSense publisher's website and either view or click an ad, a cookie may be dropped on that end user's browser. The data gathered from these cookies will be used to help AdSense publishers serve and manage the ads on their site(s) and across the web more effectively.

Sounds OK, but up till now you could basically see the sort of ads that were appearing on your site now with the ads being linked to the visitors profile what you see and what one of your visitors see may be totally different which means you have relinquish some control over your sites. At the end of the day if it increases the CTR advertisers will love and if it doesn't they won't.

I'm going to watch developments closely.

Grace Rebecca Ellen Forsyth (2008 - 2009)

Back in November I was delighted to post that work on the site had slowed because we had been joined by Grace.

Now it is with shock and a sadness so deep it is impossible to measure that I have to report that Grace passed away suddenly and in her sleep on the morning of Saturday 14th February.

Grace was a wonderful baby; she loved company and would complain if she wasn't being held by someone. Every day she would fall asleep in my arms and I would work on the site one handed knowing she would wake up if I lay her down in her bed.

Grace brought joy and light to everyone who met her. She leaves a hole in our lives that can never be filled. A part of me died with her yesterday. Her brother Mark was weeping; her mother Charmaine is not coping at all. Her sister Abigail wept herself to sleep last night. Jacob is in tears.

No matter how bad you can imagine this to be trust me when I say that it is worse than that. You go over in your head the events that led up to her death asking yourself if there were any signs you should have seen, but there were none, you blame yourself even though everyone is telling you not to.

Grace was sleeping in the bed next to me. I had been working late the night before and was having a lie-in. Her mother checked on her before going downstairs to dress Lucy when she came back 10 minutes later I was still asleep and Grace was gone.

The exact cause of her death is yet to be determined but trying to find out what happened in those ten minutes is the only thing keeping me sane right now.

New Year's Resolutions

Ok, so Christmas is over and we're all sick off the sight of leftover turkey but it's 2009 (at last) and time to get things into order.

That's where Resolutions come in. You know the promises you make to yourself that are usually forgotten by now.

Mine should be to post here more often, but actually they are more complicated than that and involve a hospital appointment, a surgeon's knife, a legal process a lot of as yet un-earned money.

While resolutions for the New Year give us a wonderful sense of positive intent, they are extremely hard to stick with unless we turn them into clear, well-defined goals.

Using Affiliate Programs to Boost Web Site Traffic

I received the following advice in an email from AddMe.com and I thought I should share it more widely.

It addresses why merchants should use affiliate programs as part of their online sales drive and well thought through.

Have you ever heard of using affiliate programs to get a boost in targeted visitors to your web site? This can be an excellent web site traffic promotion to put visitors in touch with the products or services you have available on your site.

Let’s say you have a product you have created and are selling on your website for $97 (In this example the product will be an e-Book).

Visitors arriving on your site, pay $97, and can then download the e-Book. Your profit is $97 less any payment processing fees (credit card, etc).

With an affiliate program, you pay a commission for every sale of your product or service that is made by a referral of your affiliate. You pay for results only, no sales means no payment.

This means you are getting someone else to market and promote your web site for free!

What does this mean? More targeted visitors of course as more visitors are sent to you by the affiliate.

It's highly likely that a large portion of the visitors may never have found your web site, so in many ways these sales could be thought of as bonus sales, above and beyond those you would ordinarily have made.

The downside is you need to share a percentage of the sale with the affiliate but you should also remember that it is quite possible the customer will buy more from you in the future.

This is the power of affiliate programs and affiliate marketing in general. Not having an affiliate program is an area where lots of marketers fall down.

Assuming you have an opt-in in place, then not only have you made a sale, but you now have a customer you can promote more products to in the future! One of Marketing 101’s golden rule is that it’s far, far easier to sell to an existing customer than to a brand new one. After all they loved your product enough to buy it, right? You have established a relationship with them at this point, and provided that your product has great relevant content they will be hooked!

The other thing to keep in mind is that it’s likely that you will have a higher percentage of sales from your affiliates visitors because (hopefully) the affiliate has already pre-sold his customers on your fantastic product. More than likely the affiliate has built up a solid reputation with his customers (who more than likely have purchased from him in the past) and because he has recommended your product, they come to your website already pre-sold that your product is a decent and worthy one, and at this point you have a visitor who already trusts and believes in your product because of the relationship they have with the affiliate recommending your products.

You need to think beyond the commission you are paying the affiliate and look instead at the long term relationship you have the potential to build with your new customer.

Make sure you look at using affiliate programs to maximize web site traffic. Payment is only required if the visitor purchases an item, so you have no upfront costs.

Christmas Promotions

As previously posted Christmas comes but once a year and this year it comes right in the middle of a worldwide recession. Many retailers are expecting tough times and here in the UK it doesn't look like Woolworths will make it to Christmas. The result of all this is retailers desperate to shift their stock even if it means reducing their margins.

This is all good news for affiliates as lower prices usual mean more sales and more sales mean more commissions. Some retailers have realised this and started offering affiliate incentives.

Grace Rebecca Ellen

Close observers of Global Affiliate Programs will have noticed that there haven't been many updates in the last couple of days. This has also been true of Sleep Easy Loans and Cathie's Cars.

This is because on Tuesday 18th November at 11.45pm Grace was born, weighing 5lbs 3 ozs. She joins her sister Lucy, her brother Mark, her step-sister Abigail and her step-brothers Jacob and Toby.

Mother and baby are now home and are both doing well.

Early Christmas Promotions

Ok, now that US election, Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes night are out of the way we can all start work on the annual celebration of spending known as Christmas. Don't get me wrong I love Christmas; I even almost never log on to find out if I've earned anything during Christmas Day - I get up early on Boxing day and check it then.

Seriously though, if you're going to run a Christmas promotion, allow for the time it can take to get new pages or updates registered with search engines and start now.

But wait I hear you say, no-one is supposed to have any money so Christmas spending is expected to be down this year. This is true so expect the more forward thinking merchants to start running their promotions early. Promotions can come in all kinds of ways, for instance the Early Learning Centre has got some great Christmas promotions including up to 1/3 off selected toys and FREE Delivery on orders over £50, PC World are offering Double commission on all Digital Photoframes (this runs out on 25th November so buy early), John Lewis have produced a RSS feed you can add to your site which list their Christmas offers, and for the more grown up amongst us Ann Summers have launched their Christmas creatives which includes of course a pretty model in a Mrs Christmas outfit.

So you see the things we're going to end up buying anyway like toys and gadgets can still be sold, with savings for your visitors and commission for you.

I had been planning to blog about how the credit crisis seems to have triggered a rush by merchants to bring forward their Christmas sales programmes with many announcing promotions which include affiliate incentives, early price reductions and so forth but the events of Tuesday have forced that of the agenda until my next post.

I just want to say to anyone from the USA that it looks like this time you have chosen a president that the rest of world can welcome and with whom we can do business. You have chosen hope over fear and for that I wholeheartedly congratulate you all.

PepperJamNetwork Store Builder

What would you think about a tool that could fill a virtual store with goods that priced up live and are ready to sell?

I know what you're thinking. You're think 'George lots of affiliate networks use widgets or storefronts from the merchants on their books to make selling online easier so what are you on about.'

Fair comment. It's true that Affiliate Networks such as LinkShare and AffiliateWindow use single merchant storefronts and widgits and you can see examples of their use here for Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts and Cadburys Gifts respectively. PepperJamNetwork's Store Builder tool is different because you can compile into one store items being sold by different merchants.

My example is a store selling merchandise from the recent Batman film, The Dark Knight. In theory the content of this site could come from MGM Store, New Line Cinema, or WBStore. It will however only come from the studio that made the film, but if your store was more general, say a ladies clothes store, you could easily populate it with thousands of items of stock in minutes.

The process is simple.

1. Join PepperJamNetwork.
2. Pick you merchants and apply to join their programs.
3. Go to Store Builder, select the merchants you want to include in your store.
4. Configure the colour and size of the store builder so that it fits seamlessly into your site.
5. Start selling.

This tool is so simple you could build a new store every day. The only difficult part would be thinking up new domains to host them.

Affiliate Programs and the Credit Crunch

Judging from some of the reaction I've read about in the press to the downturn in money supply that has become known as 'The Credit Crunch' you think the world of commerce had come to a full stop.

Friends who know that I'm heavily involved in Internet Marketing have been asking what I'm going to do now that no-one is buying anything. Everyone seems to assume that the online marketing industry has ground to a halt.

Nothing could to be further from the truth.

OK, I've seen a few programs in the financial services sector cease in the last few weeks but there's a high churn in that sector at any time. My advice to anyone involved in a business that might be at risk is 'Don't cut back on advertising. This is your opportunity to steal a march on your competitors who may be cutting back.'

So the money supply has dried up has it? No, it hasn't and neither has people's need for the things they buy. Unless you are in a business that's directly affected your income most likely is unchanged. If you own your home with a mortgage you may have seen your equity fall and in some cases it may even be a nominal negative figure right now. All that means is that if you sold your house you wouldn't raise enough money to clear the mortgage on it. So if you don't have to sell, then don't. It's not rocket science. Negative equity can really be a problem if you're having to move but if you don't just stay put.

I had this situation with a flat I owned when the market crashed in the early 90's. Prices had fallen to the point where I could buy, so I did. All the experts said the market had bottomed out. It hadn't- prices continued to fall. I paid £47,000 for my flat. Eighteen months later it was worth half that. Four years and one child later with another on the way we had to move and the property still wasn't worth what I owed on it. So we rented, and rented the flat out to make up some of the shortfall, and we took in a lodger and I took a second job, working online. Times were tough and I had more outgoings each month than I had incomings and debt started to mount.

The key aout this was it was all planned. Four years later I sold the flat for £75,000, clearing the mortgage and all my debts and leaving a nice balance for me.

So if anyone if worrying - Don't Panic!!!

These things go in cycles but they are so slow in turning that people forget the last time we were at this point.

Anyway back to Internet Marketing. Just this week I've added some new programs to the directory on Global Affiliate Programs. Familiar names such as WH Smith, Yahoo and Wicked Lingerie. Direct Agents have also justed launched their own referal program. They've been running as network fr a while now but have just launched their own program so hopefully I'll start getting paid for the affiliates I refer to them.

I can also confirm that PepperJamNetwork who I have blogged about before do pay on time, through PayPal, as I received my first payment from them since joining a few months back.

I'll leave with a final thought. There's no money around so we're all doomed? Not in this life , we're not and here's why.

On Tuesday a campaign that I support started. It had been planned a few months ago quietly, on the web, between people who knew about it. I've added a link on this blog. It's the link named Atheist Bus Campaign.

A bit of background. There was an article the Guardian newspaper in June which was reproduced in their online discussion forum 'Comment is Free'. It was written by the comedy screenwriter Ariane Sherine and was about how she had been so shocked by a pro-religious ad on a London bus that she had checked out the ad owners website only to be told she was damned to eternal suffering and fire, or words to that effect.

As a throwaway line she suggested that maybe atheists should advertise on buses as well. The small online community that is CIF thought this was a great idea. It was soon discover that a bus ad campaign would cost £11,000. The idea therefore was to raise 2,200 donation of £5 each, the sum which had earlier been suggested as a fair donation.

Ok, so how long should a small atheist online community give itself to raise 2,200 donors?

Firstly in the meantime the biology professor and author of The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins heard about the campaign from somewhere and promised to match any donation up £5,500, so the target was halfed and the blue touch paper lit.

The idea was to run the ads on buses in Janaury, so the campaign launched itself through the justgiving web site at 7.30 am on 21st October, plannning to raise the £5,500 by January 2009.

The target sum was reached at 10.06 am. It took only two hours 36 minutes for word to get around and for people to donate the amount needed. By lunchtime that sum had doubled. By the evening Christian Voice, an extreme right wing Christian group (actually one bloke as far as we can work out but he's very vocal) had started to condemn the campaign and the speed of donations increased.

After just four days the Atheist Bus Campaign has raise a staggering £102,770.93. The largest donation, excluding that of Professor Dawkins being £3,250 paid in two installments from the one person.

So in January if you are in London you may see buses running around with the line "There's probably no God, so stop worrying and enjoy your life."

So anyone still thinking there's no money out there? You just have to have something people will be willing to part with money for, like a rational view that doesn't scare you with fairy stories.

So in conclusion, as this has gone on longer than I though it would.

There's probably no shortage of money, so stop worrying and enjoy your life.

The Best and the Worst things about Affiliate Marketing

The worst think I've found so far about affiliate marketing is that some merchants completely ignore the needs of the affiliates.

As I think I mentioned on a previous post I'm currently auditing Global Affiliate Programs by going through each page and clicking each link to each program making sure that they still work. I know the links worked when they were first added but now can be a different story.

The first thing you find is that some merchants re-organize their sites so that the page you were sending visitors to is no longer there. So the first thing visitors see is an error message which is far from professional. The worst thing they do is shut the site down altogether or in some cases throw up a hosting company page saying the domain is now for sale.

Would it really have been too much trouble for them to send a quick email to all affiliates letting them know?

My audit has just reached the "Entertainment" section but the worst offenders by far were in the the sale of ebooks. I had to delete almost a third of the listed programs because they were no longer live.

Anyway that's enough gripping from me. Only a small minority of merchants do the things above and when they do I drop them like hot bricks. Decent merchants let you know when they are changing affiliate network or taking it in-house, or stopping promotions or ending the program altogether.

On a much happier note I can say that the best thing about affiliate marketing is when something you thought would be a success starts paying off. As George Peppard use to say in The A Team "I love it when a plan comes together".

Back in June I was contacted by CarTrawler who wanted me to promote their program. The key thing here was that CarTrawler offer an interactve booking agent as their means of attracting business.

I put that page together in late June and linked it up through the pages on my virtual shopfront at http://www.globalaffiliateprograms.co.uk/goshopping.shtml and waited. My first sale notification came in on 10 July. By the end July there had been another 3 and there have been 4 so far in August. I can almost hear you thinking "8 sales, that's not much George", but let's take a step back and think what CarTrawler do. They act as a search mechanism for people who want to hire a car while they are on holiday. The customers books the car whilst in the UK, picks it up at the airport they arrive at for their holiday and drops it back when they are flying home. So the price per sale is high AND SO IS THE COMMISSION !!!!!

CarTrawler work in Euros and the payment threshold is €200l whcih is a high threshold. Commission is shown as 'pending' until the car is picked up ans presumably the customer confirms payment. I will be due my first check at the end of August (7 sales) with one sale for September already in the bag because that is when the customer is picking up his car.

Our First Poll

Ok, I've been waiting for an excuse to use some of the features that Blogger offers so here we go.

One of the account managers mentioned to me in an email that he thought his program wasn't getting many hits because it was not on the first page in his section.

To explain; within the affiliate program directory in Global Affiliate Programs each section lists the program in alphabetical order with a maximum of 30 programs on each page. Sections can have as many as six pages at the moment.

The idea behind this is so that it does not take too long from each page to load. The first page of each section is linked from the navigation and each page within a section contains links to each other page within that section, so there are no orphaned pages.

The purpose of this poll is to find out whether you would prefer things to stay as they are or whether I should go back to just having one page per section with all programs within that section listed even if that means the pages become much bigger.

Let me know which you would prefer.

New Affiliate Network

It's not often I have a completely new affiliate network that I can add to Global Affiliate Programs but this week I do.

The network in question is PepperJam, and before you ask I have no idea why it's called that.

Usually when a 'network' contacts me it turns out to be filled with short-term email based campaigns that I can't run but one look and PepperJam and I knew they were the real deal.

Their merchants are real merchants selling real products to real people and by that I mean it's not ebooks on How to do Something you Never Thought Needed Doing or pills that can revolutionize your life. I found some merchants such as BiggerBras and eBay that I had previously listed which had left their earlier networks. Now at least I know where they went. In web terms there's not much bigger than eBay.

I also found other programs that I just could not resist and have joined and added to the directory on Global Affiliate Programs such as The Cartoon Network, MGM, Warner Bros' Harry Potter Shop, and Star Trek; I mean Star Trek, a brand that does it's own advertising and has done for 40 years. There's as yet undiscovered tribes in the Amazon basin who can do the hand signal and say "Live Long and Prosper". I also found iGourmet who I had previously promoted through Linkshare and for those who are not children at heart all the time Shop The Bunny which is the online clothing store for the Playboy brand.

So worldwide names that carry resonance and familiarity word-wide.

All very good, I hear you thinking, but what's the USP? Well how about this? PepperJam are offering $7.00 for each new affiliate that is referred to them. That rate is much higher than any other network I know of so if like me you rely on referrals and 2nd tier income that is a great rate.

In short if I were you I'd give PepperJam a good look and see if you can use their programs. Their merchants are varied but all real, the banners are in various sizes and content widgets are mentioned on the site, although I haven't tried to use them myself yet. It's still early days so I'll probably come back on that later. I'll also let you know if I find any other gems in their merchant list as I've still only just had a quick look myself.

First Steps in Affiliate Marketing

I haven't posted for nearly a couple of weeks but it hasn't been due to laziness; I've actually been working long and hard on changes to my sites. Now I'm finally in position to start blogging about what you need to consider if you want to make a go of affiliate marketing.

You may also notice that I've started adding links and stuff to this blog so that it's clear what it is about and to provide some useful content. This will continue, probably until I reach overload.

Anyway back to Affiliate Marketing. What is Affiliate Marketing anyway? There are many definitions. Wikipedia says Affiliate Marketing is " is a web-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affiliate_marketing It then continues further.

I don't like that definition because it makes no sense unless you already know what an affiliate is. I consider Affiliate Marketing to be pre-selling; that is the art, craft, practice or science of presenting goods and services before a selective audience that should be pre-disposed to purchase the said goods or services.

This leads to my first piece of advise to potential affiliates. Don't try to sell snow to eskimos or combs to bald men. To expand on that I'll give you example that may be a bit out of date now.

If your site is all about your pet hamster you may want to place ads on your site that relate to hamsters. Things you would be most likely to sell would be things that your audience, in this case, people who like hamsters, would be likely to buy. These would include hamster cages, bedding, feed, toys etc. You may also find that people who like hamsters also like guinea pigs and rabbits so maybe rabbit hutches will sell. The latest electronic gadgets or in-car accessories are unlikely to shift in massive numbers not because these people don't drive or have ipods but because that is not what they are thinking about if they have reached a site about a hamster.

Ok, so now we know that affiliate marketing involves advertising and selling. The key thing about affiliate marketing that separates it from multi-level marketing, pyramid selling schemes or franchising is that the affiliate never has to see the goods they are selling. This means that the costs can be very low and the rewards can be pure profit. Don't think this means it is easy - it isn't.

Back when I started in affiliate marketing the web, and it seemed the world, was a lot simpler. Most programs were pay-per-click whereby the affiliate provided more of a referral service for the merchant's site. It was simple, you just placed a banner on a prominent part of your site and expected about 1% of viewers to click it, and it worked for a time.

There are still some per-per-click programs around but outside that adult arena they are few and far between. Adsense killed a lot off as well, but I'll discus Google Adsense another time.

These days most programs rely on sales to generate commission for the affiliate. This is fairer because the more the merchant benefits for the work of their affiliates the more the affiliate benefits. But just sticking banners on an existing site isn't enough anymore.

With merchants providing XML feeds of their entire stock for affiliates to use the name of the game now is building a site with the sole purpose of selling stuff. So now our hamster example wouldn't matter. The best way for our hamster fan to make money would be to build a virtual pet shop using content generated from the affiliate programs of real pet shops' websites and maybe link to it from their page about their hamster.

I'll leave it there but return to this theme in my next post.

If anyone is reading this stuff let me know otherwise it feels like I'm talking to myself, which I do a lot as I spend too long alone whilst working on the computer as it is. I can answer questions about affiliate marketing if you have any.

I'll end with a gripe, which is really a warning. One of the reasons I was so busy is that I found that some merchants whose programs I had joined through a respected affiliate network had in fact left that network some time ago and as result the programs had ceased and I was sending traffic to dead links. I had to check out where the programs were now hosted and apply to join them again, sometimes await approval and then change the code on the web pages. Some programs had completely gone and I had to remove them. This could have been avoided had I received an email saying the programs were ending. All programs start, thrive and eventually end; that is life and I'm not griping about that. Most affiliate networks will notify affiliates if programs are about to end. In this case notifications were not sent. So my warning is this - If you join a program check it frequently to make sure it is still active otherwise you're wasting your time.

It's Father's Day on Sunday. I know this because my stepson, who is 9, suggested it would be a great idea for us all to go to the beach. Email Problems

One of the things that well run and active affiliate programs do is run short term offers. This can be because theirs is a seasonal business or because of some event like Christmas or Mothers' Day.

Normally I can't do much with these types of offers on Global Affiliate Programs as I'm trying to promote the program itself but I can add them here in the knowledge that they will eventually be archived and not be so prominent as they will be now.

My main job on Global Affiliate Programs at the moment is updating my accounts with the merchants. You see I moved house in March and need to notify all the accounts for all the programs of which I'm a member.

The big networks were easy but now I'm down to going through all the programs one by one and updating with my new address. Sounds simple doesn't it. Until you realise I have 3,496 entries in the directory. As of today I have 565 still to update. I'm going through in Alphabetical order and that is the way they're listed in my database. I'm at 'H'.

The thing about doing this is it can teach you four things.

One - Some sites have gone and no-one notified the affiliates so I have dead links. This is really annoying but is easily fixed. I just delete the program from the directory

Two - Some programs have ended and nobody has notified the affiliates so I'm sending them links and traffic but there's no program for visitors to join. Again annoying but fixed by deletion.

Three - Some merchants have improved their banners so I can make the entry more appealing. Well in my opinion anyway.

Four - sometimes a find that a program I'd joined and forgotten about has had a number of referred affiliates join it and I have a small balance owed to me that I didn't know about. All good for the soul.

After I've finished that I'll do a manual check of those that are left to make sure all the programs are still as advertised.

Then I'll see about moving programs up the pages. By that I mean making sure each page within each category has no more than 30 program on it. Sometimes I move programs to pages nearer the front; sometimes they get moved further back. It's all about balance.

OK, cards on the table. I've never blogged before so I've no idea how this is going to go.

I've decided to start a blog about my activities as a guy who tries to make a bit of money online in what is euphamyistically known as my spare time but which is in reality just about every evening and some time at the weekends.

I've been doing this for ten years now and current manage three sites. I'll add links to them once I'm more used to how this all works.

My main site is Global Affiliate Programs. This is a directory of affiliate programs and I launched the site in August 2000. At the time there weren't any UK based affiliate directories and the UK web was just taking off. The idea was to provide a resource for UK webmasters in a similar way to that provided for US webmasters by the other directories that were around then.

One of the reasons for starting this blog is that I would like to interact with the users of Global Affiliate Programs to find out if its really hitting the mark. Up till now I've measured its success privately by seeing how many affiliates I refer to each program or network but because I refuse to partake in email marketing, or spam to use its correct title I've never set up a mailing list, not even a proper join-in not non-join-out one. This blog is intended to fill that rather obvious void so if you have something to say please say it.

My secondary site is Sleep Easy Loans which is a meta search engine focusing on the UK personal Financial Services sector. I set this site up about four years ago with the help of my good friend Toby who can do far more technical stuff online than I can. It has never really taken off in the way I hoped it would.

The third site is Cathie's Cars which is not really mine but I manage its content for a friend of mine. Cathie's Cars is the best minicab company the Epsom and Ewell area and the site allows people to book cabs online. This is very useful as Epsom is about halfway between Heathrow and Gatwick airports and a lot of their business is picking up people who are flying in.

I don't want this to be too long so I'll just say a little bit about myself and see if this can go online.
My name is George (obviously); I'm 46, live with my partner, have four children of my own, (3 with my ex and 1 with my partner) and 1 step-son. Next baby is expected in November so expect soppy photos to appear about then.

I'll be posting about whatever I like. I tend to be a bit bolshie and have views on just about everything so this isn 't going to be limited to webmasters stuff.
